West Covina Loses Lead Early In Defeat
West Covina watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 1-0 loss to Whittier on Saturday. Whittier took the lead on a single in the first inning.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Whittier pitchers struck out one, while West Covina sat down five.
In the first inning, Whittier got their offense started when Alyssa Gleason singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
One bright spot for West Covina was a single by Clarissa Cruz in the second inning.
Amy Bretado earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for Whittier. She surrendered zero runs on five hits over four innings, striking out one and walking one. Bernadette Quintero threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen. Quintero recorded the last nine outs to earn the save for Whittier.
Trinity Garcia took the loss for West Covina. She surrendered one run on three hits over five innings, striking out three and walking one.
Cruz led West Covina with two hits in three at bats.
Amanda Canizales went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Whittier in hits. Whittier didn’t commit a single error in the field. Canizales had the most chances in the field with nine.
